How to Apply

PRIOR TO SUBMITTING

Review the information provided in the magnet program brochure(s) and in the program descriptions, including grade entry requirements.

Kindergarten applicants MUST meet Maryland State Age-of-Entry requirements or be tested for early admission.  Kindergarten applicants for the 2019-2020 school year MUST be age 5 by 9/1/2019, or the parents MUST apply to their zoned elementary school for early admission into kindergarten testing.

A child may only be considered for early admission into kindergarten testing for the 2019-2020 school year if he/she will be age 5 after 9/1/2019 and on or before 10/14/2019.  A copy of the letter requesting the early admission into kindergarten testing must be submitted to BCPS Magnet Programs at the time of application.

Review the Magnet Transportation Information to determine your child’s eligibility for BCPS transportation to a particular magnet program. 

Select up to 3 magnet programs for application.  Prior to submitting the application, parents should carefully review program selections.  Any change in program selection(s) requires the submission of a revised application on or before the application deadline.  NO program selection changes can be made after Friday, November 16, 2018.

Choose the method for applying.  Parents may apply online or submit a paper application.

COMPLETE APPLICATION AND SUBMIT BY NOVEMBER 16, 2018
Apply Online:  Online applications 
are accepted until 1 p.m. on Friday, November 16, 2018.  To apply online, you will need an active email account.  Important updates and reminders will be sent to the email address provided.  Parents who submit an application online will receive an email confirmation. 

OR

Apply by Paper Application: Paper applications must be postmarked on or before Friday, November 16, 2018. (Certified mailing is strongly recommended.)   NOTE:  Applications postmarked or received without a legible postmark after the November 16, 2018, deadline are not processed.

Submit only one application per applicant.  ALL applications MUST be submitted by Friday, November 16, 2018.

Parents should keep a copy of the application for their records.

CAUTION:  Applications MUST be submitted by the parent or legal guardian. Applications submitted by the student or anyone other than the parent or legal guardian risk being disqualified.


SUBMIT DOCUMENTATION (Non-BCPS, High School ONLY)
Parents of students who attended a non-BCPS school for any portion of the 2017-2018 school year are required to submit report card(s) at the time of application. 

Parents of students who are attending a non-BCPS school for the first quarter/trimester of the 2018-2019 school year are required to submit the report card when available, but not later than December 14, 2018.

Parent of students who are attending a non-BCPS school and who have documented testing accommodations as part of an active educational plan are required to submit a copy of the testing accommodation requirements from the plan at the time of application.

ATTEND ASSESSMENTS (High School ONLY)
ALL high school magnet programs, with the exception of Overlea and New Town, require applicants to attend and complete an assessment.  Failure to attend and complete an assessment will disqualify the applicant for that magnet program.

Obtain/read/review assessment guidelines
for each program to which you have applied (available on this web site after September 17, 2018)

Schedule assessment appointment(s) by Wednesday, November 21, 2018. 
Refer to the Assessment Guidelines for specific information about assessment dates/times.  Be aware of inclement weather dates and emergency policies.

Students should complete all required preparations
prior to attending assessment(s).  Some programs offer a pre-assessment workshop (see assessment guidelines for details).

Students should be ON TIME and PREPARED for each assessment.

Applicants who have accommodations as part of a documented educational plan (IEP, 504, EL, etc.) will be provided the appropriate required accommodations during the assessment(s).
