School to Career Transition (STCT) programs emphasize connecting students from career-instruction pathways to business-based experiences through job shadowing, internships, apprenticeships and work experiences. Students receive structured training and exploratory experience at work sites under the guidance of selected business mentors.

Job Acquisition Handbook

STCT offers a variety of programs which include College-Career Research and Development (CCRD), work-based learning, internships, Career and Technical Education (CTE) capstone completers, apprenticeships, and job shadowing.

Completer programs in the arts, media, and communications career cluster are also under the supervision of STCT.  These programs include graphic and print communications, and interactive media production.

 Work-Based Learning Opportunities

All students have an opportunity to apply their academic, technical, and interpersonal skills to a work-based learning experience. This authentic application of knowledge and skills is achieved by completing a structured work experience, internship, or apprenticeship.

Students will be placed in work-based learning environment linked to academic content. A business mentor, who is an expert in the chosen career content area, will guide each student in accomplishing established learning goals. STCT work-based learning coordinators will collaborate with students and business mentors to design a learning plan to meet curriculum indicators, industry standards, and individual student goals. They will meet regularly to assess student progress toward mastering learning goals. Students will receive necessary safety instruction and are subject to all child labor standards.

Work-based learning (WBL) refers to a structured and coordinated work experience that relates closely to the occupational aspect of the student's educational program. WBL programs involve:

  • A combination of academic course work and work based experiences.
  • Students earning high school credit while on the job.
  • A written cooperative agreement between the high school and the employer.
  • Connecting activities between the classroom and the work experience.
  • An opportunity to earn articulated credit to CCBC for successful completion of the CRD program.

All STCT programs emphasize the development of work-place readiness skills.  Students will develop professional portfolios and resumes to showcase their skills and experiences to present to perspective employers, and for college admission and scholarship applications.

Upon completion of a CTE program, students may receive a skill certificate, apprenticeship credit, state licensing, or industry-recognized certification.  Under the Articulation Agreement with the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC), students who successfully complete a CTE program may qualify for college credits that will articulate to CCBC.
