Mission:
The Department of Teaching and Learning provides leadership and expertise in the development of curriculum for students in Grades K–12, in order to empower and build capacity for all teachers and students through the development and implementation of rigorous, relevant, and responsive curriculum and instruction. To ensure an equitable, engaging academic experience for all students. Departmental staff provide content resources and professional learning that is grounded in research and aligned to the standards.
Department Objectives:
- Employ a collaborative approach with local and regional businesses, other government agencies, and higher educational institutions in order to provide students with the most innovative and cutting-edge technologies and instructional programs that will inspire and prepare students to be college-, career-, or military-ready.
- Monitor the effective development, implementation, and refinement of the K–12 curriculum in support of student achievement.
- Partner with community superintendents and principals to guide and oversee an effective transition to Common Core State Standards, the PARCC assessment, the digital conversion, C3 Social Studies Standards, and the Next Generation Science Standards.
- Collaborate with school administrators, teachers, writers, and experts in content-related offices to develop curriculum and initiatives that are research-based and transdisciplinary in nature through professional learning.
- Provide teachers with a systemic curriculum framework that will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the 21st century literacy skills.
- Support MSDE’s STEM initiative and the implementation of BCPS One.
